The 800 W rule for balcony solar in Germany, in plain words
What the limit applies to, how much panel power you may install, and what storage changes.

Since May 2024 a plug-in solar system in Germany may feed up to 800 VA into the household circuit. Before that the limit was 600 VA. The change came with the federal “Solarpaket I” and made three things simpler at once.
What the rule says
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Inverter output | at most 800 VA |
| Panel power | up to 2000 Wp in total |
| Registration | in the Marktstammdatenregister only; no separate notice to the grid operator |
| Old meter | the system may run before the meter is replaced |
Why more panel power than inverter power makes sense
A panel reaches its rated power only in full sun at the right angle. On a vertical railing four 240 W panels rarely deliver more than 600 W together. Oversizing the panels keeps the inverter near its limit for more hours of the day.
What storage changes
With a Smart Solar Hub between panels and inverter, the power the inverter may not feed is not lost: it charges the battery. In the evening the battery feeds the same inverter, still limited to 800 VA. The limit shapes when you use your solar power, not how much of it you keep.
