Solution

Balcony and apartment

Solar without a roof: panels on the railing, a plug in the socket, a battery for the evening.

Balcony and apartment
800 Wfeed-in limit in Germany
2000 Wppanel power allowed
2–6 kWhstorage, expandable
≈ 2 hto install

What this solves

No roof of your own

Flexible 240 W panels weigh a few kilograms and hang on a railing with straps. Nothing is drilled, nothing stays behind when you move.

Nobody home at noon

Without storage most of the midday yield flows into the grid for little or nothing. The Power Box keeps it for the evening.

Rules and paperwork

Microinverters certified to VDE-AR-N 4105, feed-in limit set in the app, certificates ready for registration.

How to get there

  1. 1Start with two panelsTwo 240 W panels and an 800 W microinverter cover the base load of a flat.
  2. 2Add the Hub and a Power BoxFour panels feed the Hub; what the flat does not need charges the battery.
  3. 3Grow to 6 kWhUp to three Power Boxes in parallel, without replacing anything you already own.

Questions we hear most

Do I need an electrician for a balcony system?

In Germany, Austria and several other EU countries a plug-in system up to 800 VA may be connected by the user. You still have to register it. Rules differ by country, so check with your grid operator before you buy.

What does the 800 W limit refer to?

To the AC output of the inverter, not to the panels. In Germany the panels may add up to 2000 Wp while the inverter feeds at most 800 VA into the house. With storage, what the inverter cannot feed charges the battery.

I rent my flat. Can I install one?

In Germany tenants have been entitled to a plug-in solar system since 2024; the landlord may only refuse for good reason. Flexible panels fixed with straps leave no marks on the railing. Elsewhere, ask your landlord in writing.

How much electricity does a balcony system produce?

It depends on location, direction and tilt. Panels hung vertically on a south railing in central Germany give roughly 650–700 kWh per installed kWp per year; tilted at 30° about 1000 kWh. Use the savings calculator for your city.
